Dr. Beverly Karplus Hartline is principal investigator, interim chair of the Alliance, and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at UDC. Previously she was Dean of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology at Delaware State University. She has conducted remote sensing research at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, served as a Research News reporter for Science, and held positions at various U.S. national laboratories, ranging from scientist to Deputy Laboratory Director.
From 1989 to 1996, she was Associate Director and Project Manager of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia, responsible for ensuring its construction met scientific goals within budget and on schedule. She also directed pre-college education/outreach programs there. From 1996 to 1998 she was the Assistant Director for Physical Science and Engineering at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
She has taught at Hampshire College (MA) and served as an administrator and visiting professor at Heritage University (WA). As a member since its inception in 1999 of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group on Women in Physics, she participated in organizing three IUPAP International Conferences on Women in Physics (2002, 2005, and 2008), and was lead editor of the conference proceedings.
As a member of the congressionally mandated NSF Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) from 2003-2009, she served as its chairperson in 2007. She is a Fellow of the Association for Women in Science and the American Physical Society, currently serving on its Committee on Minorities.
She has been appointed to the National PSM Advisory Board (2009-2012). Hartline is also a member of Sigma Xi, AAAS, American Association of Physics Teachers, and the American Geophysical Union. Her baccalaureate degree is in chemistry and physics from Reed College (Oregon), and her Ph.D. is in geophysics from the University of Washington, Seattle.
