Paulinus Chigbu

Dr. Paulinus Chigbu is UMES PSM Coordinator. He is Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences (Fisheries) and Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC)  at UMES. This center partners with the University of Maryland Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB), Delaware State University, Savannah State University, Hampton University, and University of Miami.

He previously served as Director of the $2.5 million NOAA NESDIS-funded multidisciplinary project entitled “Environmental Risks Assessment Integrative Systems Approach with Remote Sensing/GIS”. He coordinated the NSF funded “Louis Stokes Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation” (LSMAMP) at Jackson State University (JSU) from 2000 to 2003.

He has coordinated or participated in many student-mentoring programs, including the University of Southern Mississippi-Jackson State University Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in coastal sciences funded by NSF, and the American Fisheries Society (AFS) Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program. For the past few years, he has collaborated with scientists at NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Woods Hole and offered an intensive summer course in Fish Stock Assessment. Dr. Chigbu earned a Ph.D. in Fisheries from the University of Washington in 1994.
