Dr. David C. Culver is Professor of Environmental Science, coordinator of the PSM program at American University, the designated American University liaison to the Alliance, and a co-PI. He recently stepped down as Associate Dean for Science at American University after serving in that position for four years, and has previously served as Chair of both the Departments of Biology and Chemistry.
Dr. Culver received his B.A. from Grinnell College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He was a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Population Biology at University of Chicago. From 1971 to 1987 he was on the faculty of Northwestern University, first in the Department of Biology and then in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Since that time he has been on the faculty at American University.
Dr. Culver developed both the undergraduate and graduate environmental studies programs while at American University, and chaired the university Middle States Study Committee for reaccreditation, from 2002-2004. He was one of the founders of the Karst Waters Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the scientific study of caves and karst. He has a special interest in the Western Balkans, and is an Associate Researcher at the Karst Research Institute in Postojna, Slovenia.
